This one's been on the review 'to do' list for ages now, but we've never got round to doing it. Well, with the Century Tavern over the road and the Three Wise Monkeys even closer, we tend to get a little distracted.

The John Young loses out, I'm afraid, on looks and reputation. the other two pubs in the triumvirate are very much rated, and designated meeting places, but no-one says "Oh, I'll meet you in the John Young" these days. Of course, the comparative glitz of the Monkeys over the road will probably drag in the rest, leaving the John Young fairly, but not completely, quiet.

There's a Spanish Restaurant here which we've also been meaning to try, so rest assured, we'll get round to a full review soon!

Used to live in Sydney about 15 years ago and the Spanish Restaurant her was one of my favourites. Took plenty of visitors there and always recommended the Octopus and guests were duly satisfied. The pub was always basic but satisfied my needs. Haven't been back for a while but have great memories of the dining.

As someone who knows this area very well (I worked around the corner in Sussex St for 17years) I have to say that the Sir John Young is the last of a dying breed. The food is great out the back, yes try the BBQ octopus, the bar itself is the last bastion of real pubs. The Monkeys is just a hoax. It started well but now it caters for the wannabes and backpack crowd...not that there is anything wrong with that. The John Young is a great place to go grab a schooner and stand watching the world go by. It has none of the rubbish that seems to go along with Sydney CBD pubs ie lots of stainless steel and attitude. It is just a good old fashioned corner pub! Do yourself a favour, plonk yourself down on a stool, sip on a beverage and have a chat. You'll love it.

I'll certainly be checking it out when I visit in November as I might find I actually own a stake in it!!!!!

Give it a fair go! Those not seeking to be part of the "in crowd" phoney posse might be pleasently surprised!

The Spanish restaurant rocks! Very authentic and worth a try. Good for a Friday lunch with the office gals then off to the Monkeys across the road!

One of the best spanish restuarants in Sydney - great atmosphere and fantastic food. The pub is dodgy but the restuarant is always packed.
