General Gordon

Burrows Ave, Sydenham
(02) 9557 1322

More pubs in Outer Sydney >>

Right next to Sydenham Station, The General Gordon is an unprepossessing local which seems to have excess emphasis on the pokie lounge for our tastes. The front bar and 'bistro', and the beer garden, are slightly down at heel and dog-eared, which generally we like, but then sandwiched in the middle is what appears to be a fairly expensively fitted pokie lounge and adjoining bar. It's a contrast for sure. Having said that, the beers are cheap, the locals are friendly enough and the bottle shop is well-stocked. The beer garden is a tad noisy, since the flight-path for Sydney Airport passes very close by indeed, and the altitude here is pretty low, but inside you wouldn't know the difference. It's also pretty spacious inside, and comfortable in a local-pub kind of way.

Indeed, I have been back again, and the older gentleman from behind the bar is missing, but the smile on the faces of the others has increased.

Yes its true Karaoke Mondays and Trivia Tuesdays. Both nights attract small crowds (u can still get a table). The pub itself is split into 4 rooms. The Thai Restuarant - Great food under $10, Front Bar - Huge 2 pools tables jukebox, TAB Room - Tiny but fully laid out, Back Room - Huge 1 pool table and pokies. I would disagree with Davids comment about the staff though. It was unfortunate that the night he was there all the staff were new except for one so the staff were concentrating on their work. Being a local I find all the staff very freindly and know most by name. The Gordon where a pub is still a pub. Come and have a beer or two.

I've been to a few pub trivia nights around the inner city, but none of them hold a candle to Gavin's trivia at the GG on Tueaday nights. Friendly and VERY daggy. That's the way KC and the Sunshine Band like it.

Went there to the newly started Monday karaoke, great location - right next to Sydneham Station. Nice big front bar, nicely modernised in a traditional style, good acoustics, good prices, long high tables and stools, bar-staf could learn to smile and make one feel welcome though!
