The Angel is part of the Merivale chain - famous for such 'being seen' spots as Establishment and Slip Inn, but you wouldn't really know it. Far more down-to-earth than its Yuppie brethren, The Angel is a place where you can have a relaxing beer in surroundings which, while not tatty, could be described as well worn.
There are three levels to choose from as you step onto the marble step a the front. Down is Pokies. ahead is the saloon - bar stools, wood and a fairly small bar. Upstairs is the lounge area, with one of the smallest bars I've ever seen in a pub, and a single pool table.
You're surrounded by statuettes and vases, the original tiles still grace the walls and lounging back in your chair, you'll always find your eye drawn to something. The service is friendly and quick and the lounge is cosy.
The crowd on our review visit is mostly city types, a few suits a few more casual folk and afew who look like they've been glued to the bar for an age. It's a great atmosphere and one I'd hate to see spoiled. It's off the main drag for most night-time Sydney drinkers, so there's a certain feeling of exclusivity. In fact, it reminded me very strongly of a couple of back-street gems I discovered while in Edinburgh for the festival - not absolutely mobbed out, but with a great feeling of being somewhere 'different'. We'll be coming here again.
