Oscars is just round the corner from PubGuide HQ, so obviously we've been in at the ground floor, so to speak. We were in for cocktails shortly after it opened, and we've been in for one or two Gin and Tonics since then.

Of course, regular readers will already be familiar with our love of genuine pubs and our ambivalence for swanky bars. Sometimes we love them, sometimes we hate them, and often we detest the fact that bar culture is driving real pubs into the suburbs, however, we can't really say a lot about Oscars, since it's a new venue rather than a real pub bastardised by the lure of the yuppie buck.

And this is possibly why we actually like it. Being about three doors up from the Pyrmont Bridge, it does a couple of things. First, the suits aren't crowding the PBH out. Second, the suits aren't crowding the PBH out.

OK, maybe that's a bit harsh. It's actually a pretty good spot to have a cocktail or two, or a swanky meal, or an afternoon G & T. I have to admit, I'm more likely to pop in here for a quiet one in the afternoon than to face the PBH and all that goes along with it. I've been known to do saturday afternoon here over the SMH crossword more than once in preference to the other local pubs, but bear in mind I'm doing the crossword.

Oscar's really isn't quite there yet, but it's getting better. Look out for later reviews, they're bound to crop up soon.
