Balmain & Rozelle

Some very high quality watering holes on a virtual island

It's a little bit out of the way if you don't live there, but let me tell you, these areas are worth the effort. Take a ferry to East Balmain or a bus to Rozelle and you won't be disappointed.

Balmain is at its heady best on Sunny weekends, and contains a fair smattering of pubs, more of the 'honest local' variety than the impersonal 'yuppie bar' style, with particular quiet gems including the Riverview and the Bald Rock. If you're up for a louder night out, try upstairs at the Unity Hall, or somewhere in-between, go for the London or the Town Hall.

Live Music thrives at the Rozelle end of Darling Street, with the Cat And Fiddle, Three Weeds and the Bridge all promoting live entertainment.

Try it, you'll like it!

Bald Rock
warm, inviting and tucked away off the beaten track
Bridge
Entertainment central
Cat and Fiddle
A live music venue since Adam was a boy
Commercial
feels a little cramped - probably the pokies
Dick's
featuring 'the dome' restaurant
Dry Dock
A good little local
Exchange
spacious and classy, but the safari bar is a strange addition
Garry Owen
Best Dartboard we've found so far, and a friendly place overall. Recomended
Hicksy's Orange Grove
tucked away off the beaten track, a locals' pub with colour
London
Very popular at weekends
Merton Estate
Local on a busy main road
Monkey Bar (Balmain)
Red Lion
Well presented with a large balcony area
Riverview
A positive haven
Rose, Shamrock & Thistle (3 weeds)
We're told the live music has stopped, but it's said to be worth a look
Royal Oak
A little, well, middle-aged.
Sackville
It's meant to be swish, we find it sterile, but it has the biggest bottle-shop in these parts
Sir William Wallace
...but they'll never take our freedom
Tattersalls
busy road, busy pub?
Town Hall
we liked the balcony, despite the stiff breeze
Unity Hall
very friendly indeed
Welcome
Great Irish pub with a mainly over 30 crowd
West End
A real local's pub
